Student Visa Canada Requirements For International Students

Admission Requirements

Canada is one of the most popular destinations for international students. Before you apply for a study permit, you must meet a number of admission requirements.

First, you must have the funds to cover your tuition fees, accommodation, and food expenses while studying in Canada. This can be done in a variety of ways – personal savings, student loans, scholarships, and assistantships.

Second, you must have a valid passport that will allow you to return home after your studies are complete. You may also need to get a medical exam and a police check before submitting your application.

Finally, you must be prepared to take standardized tests like IELTS or TOEFL. Each university and programme has its own minimum requirements for these tests. However, IELTS is the most common choice for most students. It is important to register for these tests as early as possible, and ensure that you finish them before September of the year that you wish to study in Canada.

Financial Requirements

As an international student, your chances of getting a study visa or study permit depend on your ability to support yourself financially while in Canada. Therefore, you must have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for your entire period of studies in Canada.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires students to show that they have a fund of approximately $10000 for living expenses. This means that you will need to prove $25,000 in total before you can apply for a study permit in Canada.

Vaccination Requirements

All international students must provide proof of vaccination against varicella (chickenpox), tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap) and hepatitis B. Students who are 25 years or older must also provide documentation of 2 doses of Bexsero or 3 doses of Trumenba.

Travellers from hepatitis A (HA)-endemic countries should be immunized against HA as soon as possible after entering Canada. HB vaccine is also recommended for all household contacts of HA-infected individuals, including children from countries with high HB prevalence and those who have traveled to a country where HC is endemic.

Fully vaccinated travellers are able to enter Canada without quarantining for 14 days as long as they have a positive Covid-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours of their travel. They must submit all required COVID-19 information electronically into ArriveCAN prior to their trip, have a paper or digital copy of their proof of vaccination, and have a suitable quarantine plan.

Criminal Record Requirements

A criminal record can be a serious issue when applying for Student Visa Canada. You may be denied entry if your criminal history is too extensive, or you have committed multiple crimes.

In some cases, you may be able to overcome your criminal record by being deemed rehabilitated. This requires a longer process, and can take up to a year to complete.

You can apply for deemed rehabilitation if you have been found to have changed your behaviour and are unlikely to commit any further crimes in the future, despite your earlier criminal record. Immigration officers will consider your life since the crime and whether you have become a positive influence in your community.

In most cases, the criminal rehabilitation option is only available if you have finished your full sentence for the crime (paid all fines, served probation, etc.) more than five years prior to your application for admission to Canada. You also need to be sure you have received a pardon from the country you were convicted in before submitting an application.
